In the early 19th century the Furness area south of the Lake District was isolated and remote. Access to it was via a treacherous route across Morecambe Bay sands. The Furness Railway was started as a mineral railway in , designed to provide a link from the slate and iron ore quarries of south Lakeland to the coast, so that the ore could be shipped directly to the markets.
The port of Barrow-in-Furness was created and the town rapidly expanded.

On 1st September , at least a decade after Germany and other European countries had allowed it, the Post Office permitted cards published and sold privately and commercially to be sent through the post with a postage stamp affixed. Prior to that date, cards could only be mailed in a containing envelope. Initially cards sold in Britain were imported from Europe, since only European publishers had the experience and the printing technology.
Raphael Tuck & Sons was a business started by Raphael Tuck and his wife in Bishopsgate in the City of London in October , selling pictures and greeting cards, and eventually selling postcards, which was their most successful line. Their business was one of the best known in the “postcard boom” of the late.
In a little shop in Bishopsgate over a century ago, began a business that would have an artistic effect on most of the civilized world. Raphael Tuck and his wife Ernestine worked together. The little shop opened in October of on Union Street in London, and the influence of that event was to be felt on two continents.
Ernestine was a wise and competent businesswoman and Raphael an artistic perfectionist. The business began with the sale of pictures and frames but within a few months of their arrival Raphael has established himself as a distributor of graphic art printing which included chromos, oleographs and black and white lithographs. A native of Prussia, he and his wife displayed reproductions of famous and popular art along with those Victorian greeting cards that were available at the time.
Tuck had made contact with lithographers in his native country to supply him with work from their presses suitable for British and American sale. Tuck was born August 7, in Koschmin Poznan where he devoted his early years to the study of Judaism, including a working knowledge of Hebrew. His interest and enthusiasm for Orthodox Judaism led him to become an accomplished Talmudic scholar; and, although he spent the middle years of his life in business, he never fully left his study of the Talmud and Hebrew history.
Raphael was married to the former Ernestine Lissner in March of She gave birth to seven children, four boys and three girls, -all born in Prussia prior to their migration to England. As the family of seven children grew, the children provided more help to the business. Raphael sent out his sons, Herman, Adolph and Gustave to bring in more business. Herman and Adolph also went on selling trips, and at the end of the day they would check the results of the days work.

One of the best sources of information about Jersey life in the early 20th century is the postcard. Several decades before local newspapers began to include photographs, postcards were being printed in their thousands for holidaymakers to send messages home to friends and family. They were also widely used within the island for exchanging messages before the telephone became widely available. When postal services were faster and more reliable than today it was common to send a postcard to arrange a meeting the following day.
Many of the photographs from the late Victorian era and the early part of the 20th century which survive today were printed as postcards. They are very collectible items and many suppliers have catalogue listings on line. Details are rarely available of when cards were published. Dating of cards is usually done using the date stamps on cards that have been through the post.
So far no cards, dated before , have been found for Alderney. At a time when the postal service was the main means of communication, postcards proved instantly popular, and from their introduction until the outbreak of the First World War thousands of cards with Channel Island views were produced by a large number of businesses, most of which disappeared after a few years, but a few continue to produce cards today. In Jersey in the early s a number of local photographers published their own cards.
Most prolific of these was Albert Smith. Over real photo and printed cards, many of which were numbered, were produced. The firm that bore his name continued to produce cards into the s.
