We live in a world of convenience and nearly everything we do in this digital age is done from our cell phones. As amputees, we go through stages of grief. Once we lose our limb, we have to learn to walk using a prosthesis without falling over! Not to mention dealing with body image issues. New amputees go through many of the same thoughts and feelings we all did when we were going through puberty. This was a challenge for me. I had two years in between my amputations so, in a sense, I went through this stage twice.
I spoke to someone recently who said that one non-negotiable factor when dating is that the other person must have all their limbs intact. Although that statement may appear shallow, the person who said it is not. It will be Interesting to see how many people share the same view. Are you missing any limbs yourself? Do you feel that you’re at a disadvantage when dating?

He had, however, played in able-bodied football teams and swam competitively for Wales. He said the defendant had taken to carrying a weapon — one blade from a pair of scissors — between his toes after an incident when he had been threatened while walking in woodland.
The court heard his parents were “concerned and frustrated” about him carrying the weapon and on November 3 last year a confrontation between the defendant and his dad took place about the blade. At the age of 16 Ravellette rejoined his family partly because he was a discipline problem but was initially barred from attending high school by the principle – in the era, as Ravellette understood it, physical handicaps were equated with mental handicaps. However while attending high school Ravellete’s reputation was not built because of his lack of arms as much as by his “rebel” confrontational attitude where he “didn’t back down” when fellow students picked at his difference and towns people treated him differently – “For the first time, I felt like I was a cripple.

Linda Bannon, 36, has never let her disability hold her back…. Imagine if you were born without any arms. How would you put on your make-up, text your friends, or eat with a knife and fork? Born with the rare genetic disorder Holt-Oram syndrome, which affects the heart and causes skeletal abnormalities, Linda used prosthetic limbs until the age of 12, but cast them aside when she realised they were more of a hinderance than a help.
And her sunny outlook is infectious. In fact, the only thing she leaves to her husband Rick, a hospital porter who she lives with in Chicago, is the driving — and that is for safety reasons. I always knew I wanted to be a mum, so it would have been a bit of a deal breaker,” says Linda. Linda has been able to draw on her own experiences when it comes to bringing up Timmy. She first noticed she was different from other kids at around five, when she learned fine motor skills.
She had to do up zips or buttons with her feet. During her teenage years, Linda did well at school, and enjoyed the same things all teenage girls do, including fashion and make-up. Dating was off limits, though, thanks to parental restrictions. Sadly, however, Linda was bullied at school, but she reasons that it made her just the same as everyone else. I looked at it like they included me in whatever normal kids were involved in.
